Born in London, Sarah grew up outside Liverpool and went to boarding school at a very early age, then later studied Russian at Nottingham University. After living in Iran and Venezuela she came back to London in 1980 when she met her husband, David, and in 1993 they moved to the United States, first to Kansas City and ten years later to a small farm in Virginia. It was there that Sarah got the idea of writing about Rufus and his ‘rain phobia’.
From the start when taken out to pee Rufus would simply stand there trembling and giving that forlorn look known to any dog owner, and not budge an inch. Gradually he could cope under an umbrella. And slowly he would explore a bit more each time, but still would take his own time to accept the rain.
Sarah and David returned to England in 2019 to be closer to family and friends. Sarah is living with Alzheimer’s Disease following her diagnosis in 2021 and is so grateful to collaborate with Frances Isaacs, herself living with dementia, whose wonderful illustrations so capture Rufus’ character and quirks.
