Maria Nieto

Whether in science or art Maria Nieto’s written works have been informed and guided by social and political landscapes that intersect and enrich each other. In non-fiction Maria co-authored The Spectrum of Sex: The Science of Male, Female, and Intersex (Jessica Kingsley Publishers – Hachette Book Group) in 2020, work that highlights sex and gender diversity from a biological perspective. Maria’s work in fiction includes two award-winning novels, The Water of Life Remains in the Dead (2015) and Pig Behind The Bear (2012). Both books feature a feisty Chicana who investigates crimes against the most vulnerable among us - immigrants and children. Maria also published a short story, Pan De Muerto, featured in the Spring 2017 edition of Chiricú Journal:Latina/o Literatures, Arts, and Cultures (Indiana University Press). When not writing Maria has enjoyed the classroom as a professor emerita—teaching and learning from her students at California State University, East Bay.
