Charles Bewlay

Charles has spent his life in publishing since 1981. His first ten years in educational publishing with Macmillan gave him a broad grounding in the field. There he ran a seven-year tri-national mathematics project, and also commissioned hundreds of titles in the sciences, social sciences and humanities. After ten years, he started his own niche publishing company, focusing on academic and research publications, women's NGO works, and a miscellany of occasionally interesting books such as a tertiary-level law textbook and a secondary school computer science introductory coursebook. He was also commissioned as a production consultant top research institutions in Botswana, including a SADC/EU evaluation organisation under the Botswana Institute for Development Analysis, the regional Institute of Development Management, University of Botswana faculties, the state bank, the Bank of Botswana, and the Vision 2016 and 2036 organisations.

He has been deeply involved in every aspect of book production throughout his career. He has taken on every aspect of it, being in the frontline of editing, proofreading, commissioning, designing and laying out books, marketing, and project management. He is continuously learning, taking on new directions, sometimes stumbling and falling; investigating the depths, but never drowning. Now, here is his 'inside story' to guide you. What he writes is based on his experience, but he does draw on the wisdom of others, gained over many years.

Before publishing, he was a highly dedicated mathematics, physics and integrated science teacher, the best in the world, or so he says. He loved teaching, but he left it because of an opportunity to join publishing, and ended up loving that too. He now loves helping authors and working with them.
