I was born in 1943 in the picturesque Gordon County, Georgia, where I spent my early years immersed in the rustic beauty of farms for a delightful 12 years. After a memorable childhood, I graduated from Sprayberry high in Cobb County, Georgia, in 1961, marking the first step in my educational journey.
Life took an unexpected turn when I was drafted for the Vietnam conflict, and from 1965 to 1970, I proudly served in the us navy as an electronic technician. The experiences during those four years shaped me in ways I could have never imagined.
In 1970, I achieved a significant milestone by graduating from the renowned Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering (BSEE). The rigorous academic journey instilled in me a thirst for knowledge and a passion for continuous learning.
Building on my engineering expertise, I embarked on a fulfilling 32-year career in the field of telecommunications with the Bell system. My dedication to the industry allowed me to make meaningful contributions and witness firsthand the ever-evolving world of communication technology.
In 1976, I decided to further expand my horizons by obtaining an MBA from Georgia State University, a decision that proved invaluable in my personal and professional growth.
Outside academia and career, my heart finds its joy in the warmth of family. I am blessed with a loving marriage and am proud to be a parent to two wonderful children. Moreover, my life has been enriched by the presence of seven lovely grandchildren, who bring boundless happiness and love to my world.
Throughout my life's journey, one passion has remained constant running. For an incredible 54 years, I have embraced the exhilarating world of ultra-running. From completing numerous 24-hour runs to conquering challenging 100-mile races and various 50-mile and 50k runs, the thrill of each race has fueled my spirit and determination.
My passion for ultra-running led me to become the race director for the first national 24-hour race in Atlanta, Georgia, a role I cherished as it allowed me to contribute to the growth and recognition of this awe-inspiring sport.
In conclusion, my life has been shaped by a multitude of experiences from farm life and military service to academic achievements, a rewarding career, and a deep love for family and running. I am honored to share these experiences with you through this book, and I hope that it inspires and touches your heart in unique ways. Thank you for joining me on this journey!
