Born and brought up in post war Glasgow, with the noise of riveting machines and ships' horns a constant backdrop, I've had a lifelong interest in the city and the River Clyde. Childhood holidays in St Abbs, a fishing village on the east coast, were largely spent on the sea with a creel fisherman in his open launch, and left me with a love of traditional boats.
For many years I worked as a lawyer in Glasgow. I kept myself reasonably sane by building and restoring boats, while spending as much time as possible on the west coast in Argyll, where I've lived for many years.
For 42 years I sailed and cared for Stroma, number 4 in the Scottish Islands Class of racing yachts. Over the decades I researched the histories of the fascinating original owners of these boats, who went out in all weathers. Their stories led to my first book, The Scottish Islanders. My publishers, the Scottish Yachting Archives, have done a great job with it.
