Laurie Block Spigel

Laurie Block Spigel is an author, educator and homeschooling advocate. Laurie homeschooled her sons in New York City, where she created the website HomeschoolNYC (now LaurieBlockSpigel) as a resource for homeschooling families. Her first book, Education Uncensored: A Guide for the Aspiring, the Foolhardy and the Disillusioned, is part memoir and part homeschooling guide, explaining why children struggle in America’s educational system. Her second book, Letting Them Lead: Adventures in Game-Based, Self-Directed Learning, chronicles highlights of her teaching career and introduces an alternative way to teach. Her third book, From Tails to Tales: Read, Play, Write, Create (and its companion guide), for children, families and educators, takes a self-directed approach to writing, with stories, games and creative projects. Laurie lives with her husband and cat in Maine. She continues to write and teach with a focus on play-based, personalized education, making learning fun and more meaningful.
