Jim Gath has had a fairly long - & some would say – rather strange life. He manufactured water display fountain, submersible pumps, underwater lighting, electric wheelchairs & cloissone’ picture frames.
He went on to become a founder of USA TODAY, where he helped guide the newspaper into becoming the largest newspaper the nation had ever seen.
He wrote the marketing plan for Ted Turner’s 1998 Goodwill Games. He produced a post-season college football bowl game. He produced major events, concerts & festivals.
None of that made him happy or spiritually satisfied.
In 2005, he found his true calling when he founded Tierra Madre Horse Sanctuary in Cave Creek, AZ. Tierra Madre has been the forever home to scores of horses that had been previously neglected, abandoned, injured or abused. In 2018, he realized that his horses, now fully happy & healthy, were also human healers in their own right. Since then, hundreds of people of all ages – all facing some sort of daunting challenge – have been helped by the Horses of Tierra Madre, completing a circle where horses are helped & healed by humans & then, in turn, the horses help & heal humans.
Gath lives in an apartment in his barn in the Sonoran Desert, alongside his equine ‘kids’.
