Robert Thoburn

I am Robert Thoburn, MD, a certified US National Karate Federation (USNKF) black belt, former regional coach, and state referee. I was an active member of the US National Karate Federation and dedicated many years to the sport. In 1998, I earned both the Florida State Championship in Miami and the National Championship in New Orleans. For years, I served as a coach and instructor at Katsu Dojo in Gainesville, Florida, sharing my passion for karate with students.

My educational journey began at Emory University, followed by graduation from the University of Florida College of Medicine. I completed my internship and residency in medicine at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, pursued a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and conducted immunology research focused on autoimmune diseases at Rockefeller University in New York City. I specialized in Rheumatology during my career in private practice, retiring in 1999.

Beyond medicine, I maintained long-standing business interests and volunteered extensively at an arthritis clinic. I also held a role as a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in rheumatology and immunology at Shands Teaching Hospital. Additionally, I served on state and local Arthritis Foundation boards, advocating for patient care and education.

On a personal note, I am happily married with four children and eleven grandchildren. My hobbies include playing piano, disc golf, Olympic trap shooting, and exploring advancements in artificial intelligence. These pursuits keep me engaged and curious, even in retirement.
