Shane Bugbee

Shane Bugbee is an artist, publisher, filmmaker, counterculture iconoclast, raconteur, and all-around renaissance man. Since launching his first independent publishing imprint in 1986, Bugbee has spent nearly four decades in the trenches of underground culture—documenting the fringe, preserving outlaw history, and making art to survive.

A fiercely independent DIY operator, Bugbee has published and produced work across print, film, and multimedia. His career spans landmark collaborations across the full spectrum of American counterculture—from managing and publishing controversial cartoonist Mike Diana during his historic obscenity trial, to curating art, zines, and historical artifacts that pull back the curtain on true crime, dark history, and political radicalism.

Bugbee’s books don't cater to mainstream sensibilities or play by corporate publishing rules. Whether capturing the lived history of Weather Underground revolutionaries Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, compiling rare historical relics, or publishing raw, unfiltered underground prose, his work is driven by a single guiding principle: direct action over standing by.

When he isn't publishing books, creating art, or editing film, Bugbee continues to curate independent projects, publish zines, and challenge the boundaries of American culture.
