The Last Hanging of Angel Martinez, my latest novel, was written as an homage to the beloved state of New Mexico as well as to the way in which murder mystery supports strong women protagonists and place as character. As Edgar Allen Poe (the 'father' of the mystery) once said, the form is really about exploring human evil. I write from character more than plot, and my other two books are strictly 'literary' in genre. I hold an MFA in Fiction from Vermont College and have won several prestigious awards. I am a trauma therapist for my day job, and as ever my subject in all my endeavors is the conflict of the human heart, and the place of humanity among all the wild things of the Earth. I have lived in the Southwest most of my life but 5 years ago my husband and I uprooted to Providence, RI.
