My name is R. A. Spence, and Empty, Patchy, Beard is my first children’s book. After reading and listening to hundreds of stories over the years, one day I thought, “Hey… I can do that too!” So I started writing this silly, heartfelt story about a kid who really wants his dad to grow a beard — and will do just about anything to make it happen.
Ricky, the main character, loves to learn, ask questions, play jokes, and dream big… just like me.
This book is perfect for families and classrooms, and it introduces characters inspired by real people who have meant a lot to me throughout my life. My goal is always to create stories that make kids laugh, feel seen, and spark meaningful conversations at home and at school.
Empty, Patchy, Beard is just the beginning.
My growing book collection also includes Y.C.D.I. (You Can Do It) — a confidence-building story that teaches kids life lessons about kindness, courage, responsibility, and believing in themselves. Through my creative platform OSCARRMEDIA, I’m developing even more books, activities, and kid-friendly resources designed to inspire imagination, character, and growth.
Beyond writing, I love connecting directly with children and families. I regularly lead fun, interactive presentations at schools, daycares, conventions, and community events where I read my books, share stories, and encourage kids to dream big and create boldly.
Thank you for supporting my work. If you enjoy the story, please leave a review and share it with someone who needs a smile.
More adventures are on the way!
