Born in Washington, DC to depression-era parents, the youngest of three brothers, who grew up in Northern Virginia, Mark attended high school in Miami Beach, Florida. Upon obtaining a journalism degree at the University of Florida, and a high draft lottery number, 333, allowed for a break from college, he began a serious interest in travel and living abroad that developed into a busy career in photography, working on a Mississippi River steamboat, and a long career as a Flight Attendant while simultaneously earning an advanced degree as a Psychotherapist, resulting in a decades-long clinical practice in Northern Virginia.
