Robert Gordon Spencer is a Tennessee-born actor, writer, producer, educator, and U.S. military veteran whose career has crossed film, higher education, business, and public service. Spencer first developed an interest in acting while attending college in Tennessee, where he studied under Broadway playwright and director William Snyder, a Yale MFA graduate and longtime professor. His path to the entertainment industry, however, was anything but conventional.
He served as a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman and later as an officer in the Tennessee Army National Guard. After earning his master's degree in adult education, Spencer left a successful business he had built to accept a higher-education management position in New York City. While living on Manhattan's Upper East Side, he also taught as an adjunct professor and returned seriously to acting, training at HB Studio and working on independent film productions. He additionally spent approximately a year working as a background actor on Saturday Night Live. During his time in New York, Spencer crossed paths professionally and socially with actor Alec Baldwin, who offered encouragement as Spencer considered taking a more active role in creating his own film projects. Spencer later moved into independent filmmaking, producing Expectations (2008), an experience that taught him one of his guiding lessons about filmmaking: pre-production matters.
He later became involved in Double Negative (2010), traveling to Texas for production and helping bring the independent project through an extended post-production process and eventual online release. The experience further established Spencer's interest in working both in front of and behind the camera. After relocating to South Florida, Spencer continued his career in higher education while pursuing acting. He auditioned for and was accepted into Burt Reynolds' master acting class in Jupiter, Florida. During his training, Reynolds compared aspects of Spencer's personality and acting talent to James Stewart and Garry Marshall, both of whom Reynolds had known personally. Reynolds' comments and encouragement—captured on camera—significantly influenced Spencer's decision to keep pursuing acting and eventually move his family to Los Angeles.
Spencer later returned to his native Tennessee, where his professional life has continued to combine creative work, education, and public service. He earned an MBA from the University of Memphis and a Doctor of Education (EdD) from Middle Tennessee State University. His scholarly work focuses primarily on higher education, adult and nontraditional learners, veterans, student success, and institutional leadership. As a writer and filmmaker, Spencer continues to develop original projects informed by an unusually broad range of experiences—from military service and higher education to independent filmmaking and acting.
Robert Gordon Spencer lives in Tennessee and is the father of three children.
