Dr. Matt Simpson, MD, MSc, CCFP, FCFP, CD, Major (Retired), is a family physician, Honorary Colonel, and married father of four. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces for nearly 25 years, including 13 years in the Primary Reserves where he rose through the ranks from a young reservist to a young Sergeant before entering medical school and joining the regular Force.
Although highly fictionalized, his debut novel, Before I Left, draws inspiration from his experience as a General Duties Medical Officer deployed with the Role One Medical Contingent on a short Technical Assistance Visit (TAV) to Panjwai, Afghanistan, in 2010.
He brings authenticity and depth to stories that explore the human condition, healing and resilience, the weight of duty, the cost of war, and the quiet moments of redemption in between.
He and his wife, both family physicians, teach in the Department of Family Medicine at Queen’s University. When not writing or seeing patients he can be found coaching hockey or relaxing at the lake with his family.
