Kimberly Mathis Pitts, originally from Sylva, North Carolina, has a B.A. in Spanish from Western Carolina University. She completed a master’s degree in Latin American Studies and a Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of New Mexico. Her interest in bilingual education and literacy grew as her two sons, Forrest and Walker, attended a dual-language immersion school in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She spent 25 years teaching in private and public schools and universities in Mexico and the United States.
