Joseph Ugrin

Joseph C. Ugrin, PhD, CPA, is the RSM Chair of Accounting and Head of the Department of Accounting at the University of Northern Iowa. He holds a PhD in business with an emphasis in accounting and a secondary focus in information systems from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He also holds a graduate certificate in Artificial Intelligence for Business from Rennes University in France.

Dr. Ugrin has taught managerial accounting and accounting information systems courses for nearly two decades, amongst other classes.

Dr. Ugrin researches accounting and information systems. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles, and his research has been supported by the National Association of State Boards of Accounting (NASBA), the Institute of Managerial Accountants (IMA), the Pontikes Center for Information Systems Research, Koch Industries, John Deere, and more. He has received numerous research awards from the American Accounting Association, and his research has been featured in numerous business publications, such as Forbes and Accounting Today. He serves as associate editor for Advances in Accounting and served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Information Systems and the Accounting Educator’s Journal.

Dr. Ugrin has professional experience in public accounting, corporate financial management, and manufacturing operations. He has worked as a consultant in designing the managerial accounting curriculum for the AICPA. He maintains an active CPA license, has been a member of the American Accounting Association, the AICPA, and IMA, and served as the chair of the AICPA’s Pre-Certification Education Executive Committee and other committees and task forces at state and local levels.
