Skip Crayton is a lifelong resident of New Bern, a small town in coastal North Carolina, located on the Neuse River, the widest river in America. An avid sailor, his love for the river is only exceeded by his passion for writing. Upon graduating from New Bern High School, Skip entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduating from college, he headed off for a short tour of duty in the United States Navy, where he learned to fly. With his military obligation complete, Skip joined his father in the family construction and land development business. He started writing seriously in nineteen ninety-one.
Over the last thirty years, Skip has written one journal, two novels, three non-fiction and two short stories. In nineteen ninety-eight, he was asked to write a column for The Trent Woods Times, a monthly published in his community. The success of that column led to a contract with his local newspaper, The Sun Journal, a daily with a circulation of more than twenty thousand. In 2005 those columns were compiled into Skip s first book, the very successful Remember When, now in its third printing. His last book a love story titled The Letter Sweater is also in its third printing and has broken the top 100 on Amazon’s Kindle.
His newest book, The Embers: The Bobby Tomlinson Story was released on November 7 of 2025, written together with Chris Jones and Bill Benners. Skip is married to the love of his life Carol and they have one son, Sam, a daughter-In-Law, Jane and a fantastic grandson named Crayton. They also share their home with Standard Poodles; New Bern Bear and Ruffin McNeil
