George Sylvie has worked for various newspapers, ending at The Shreveport Journal until 1983, when he pursued his doctorate from The University of Texas (UT) at Austin. There he studied the relationship between management, technology and newspapers, doing international research on the ethics, values, and problems in of newsroom management. He's been a a professor at LSU in Shreveport, Kent State University in Ohio, and at UT-Austin. In between travels and degrees, he married another Shreveport native and he and his wife raised two children, mostly in the Austin area. George worked from 1987 to 2018 for UT, where he taught various courses, wrote or co-wrote several books and articles, and conducted many journalism industry-related service projects, particularly in newsroom minority representation and hiring. George retired after 26 years at UT, earning the title of associate professor emeritus in 2018. Besides writing, in his spare time he reads, watches Chicago Cubs baseball, and takes walks.
