Beverly Murphy, MLS, AHIP, FMLA
Beverly Murphy (she/her) is Assistant Director, DUHS Nursing Library Services at the Duke University Medical Center Library & Archives. She is also the Liaison for the Watts College of Nursing. As a librarian for 44 years and a Distinguished member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals, Beverly has served in several capacities for the Medical Library Association (MLA) including the first African American President and recipient of the Marcia C. Noyes Award, MLA’s highest professional distinction. She is an MLA Fellow, Immediate Past Chair of the AAMLA Caucus, former editor of the MLA News, a member of the Journal of the Medical Library Association Editorial Board, and incoming MLA Chapter Council Chair. In addition to MLA activities, Beverly is active in the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of MLA having served as Chapter Chair, Treasurer, Strategic Planning Committee Chair, Communications Chair, Annual Meeting Registration Chair, member of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee, and is currently Chapter Council Rep. Beverly is co-editor of Diversity and Inclusion in Libraries: A Call to Action and Strategies for Success (2019) and Cultural Humility in Libraries (2024). Her research interests include librarian core competencies; diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging; health literacy; library administration; and leadership and management.
