Duncan Smart

Duncan Smart is a British author, independent researcher and publisher whose work explores Mary Magdalene, early Christianity, metaphysics, consciousness, and the recovery of forgotten spiritual writings.

His recent books have increasingly centred on the hidden and neglected currents of Christianity: the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, the place of Mary within early Christian tradition, the inner meaning of Christ, and the metaphysical ideas that flourished outside conventional religious boundaries. His books include The Voice of Mary Magdalene, The Subconscious Christ, The Seventh Breath, and his continuing research into the surviving texts and missing traditions surrounding Mary Magdalene.

Alongside his own writing, Duncan has become increasingly involved in recovering and restoring overlooked spiritual and metaphysical books from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Through Ancestral Living Press, he brings neglected authors and works back into print, combining faithful restoration with historical research, editorial context, and new introductions for modern readers. His particular interests include Christian metaphysics, New Thought, spiritual healing, consciousness, and the forgotten writers who helped shape these traditions.

This work grew from a much broader investigation into human nature. Duncan’s earlier books explored ancestral health, nutrition and metabolic wellbeing, including Ancestral Health, Carnivore: The Manual and Blood & Bone. He has lived a carnivore lifestyle for more than nine years and has spent decades involved in endurance sport, self-experimentation and the study of human performance.

Before becoming a full-time writer and researcher, Duncan was a mathematics teacher. He holds a BA (Hons) and a PGCE, and that background continues to influence the way he approaches difficult subjects: looking for patterns, testing assumptions, separating evidence from interpretation, and making complex ideas understandable without losing their depth.

His work now moves increasingly between historical investigation and the inner life, asking what early spiritual traditions actually said, what later generations forgot or suppressed, and whether ideas preserved in neglected books and manuscripts still have something meaningful to say to modern readers.
