Carl Eldridge is an English teacher and writer from Australia, now based in Japan, where he has been teaching English as a foreign language since 2008. Over the years, he has seen how rule-based grammar instruction often confuses students and slows down their ability to speak fluently.
That experience led him to create Grammar Without Rules, a book that offers teachers a visual, meaning-based alternative to traditional grammar teaching. Carl believes language and thought are deeply connected—and that we don’t speak by applying abstract rules, but rather that the language we use is shaped by meaning and our drive to communicate ideas effectively.
He is also the author of Real Grammar: Understand English. Clear and Simple, and continues to develop resources that help teachers explain grammar in ways that actually make sense to teachers and learners alike.
Carl lives in Japan with his wife and two daughters.
