Just a quick note: My new children's book, Charlie at the Dog Park is scheduled for release on Tuesday, March 17. Charlie is a Great Pyrenees puppy who is loving, caring and extremely affectionate. You will enjoy his antics during an afternoon at the local dog park, playing with his furry friends and enjoying hugs and belly rubs from the park's visitors. I am so proud of this book as it mirrors the activities of my dog, Charlie. I hope to write many more adventures for Charlie and his owner, Jeff, in the future. I think his next chapter will focus on his hike up a local mountain.

Volume 3 of the Altheizer Trilogy will come out on Dec. 1. "The End of Effort" takes place 300 years after the conclusion of "The Savage Land." Longevity for the human race seems to be coming to an end as people who underwent aging-retardation therapy four centuries ago are now aging at an accelerated rate, and many are transforming into uncontrollable, wild creatures. It seems that civilization has reached its end, with the only hope lying the wild lands where generations of People of the Forest have survived without longevity treatments.

It's possible to read "The End of Effort" without reading the first two volumes, but to get the best flavor of what the world has become following decades of global warfare, traumatic climate change and extreme starvation, it's best to begin the series with "Innocence Lost" and follow up with "The Savage Land." I invite everyone to visit this bright but bleak look at what our future could be.

What is the Altheizer Trilogy? It's probably best to start from the beginning:

Innocence Lost is a story that came to me decades ago, when I was a youngster. Its genesis comes from a recurring dream I had about people searching for a way to live longer. Although I never really did anything with that concept, the idea stayed with me, and I eventually asked myself, "What if this concept of longevity actually came to fruition in the distant future? How would people on the planet survive with no one dying?"

Still, I did not actively pursue this idea until maybe 20 years ago, when I started playing with the idea of a global disaster caused by humanity's inability to react to such issues as climate change, overpopulation, human warfare. So I started working on Innocence Lost, a story about humankind's attempt to recover from global devastation. The story takes place 200 years into the future where survivors of the holocaust are attempting to create a new society based on the concept of longevity where people now live several centuries, not decades.

So what is Altheizer? It is one of several wilderness preserves developed across the globe to ensure that the planet remains healthy and does not revert back to global-climate conditions (kind of like how wetlands protect our environment today). Altheizer Preserve is located just west of Eastern Territory, the land that used to be New England and the Middle Atlantic States when there was such a place as the United States. It's a large tract of wilderness land and is inhabited by what people from Eastern Territory call the Naturalites (they call themselves the People of the Forest), humans who have not accepted longevity but live in a natural world and have learned to thrive without modern conveniences.

It is the struggle between these two societies that ignites the conflicts in Innocence Lost and the other volumes of the Altheizer Trilogy.
