Jianjun Chen M D Ph D

Dr. JianJun Chen, a gastroenterologist, grew up in China during the Cultural Revolution. He earned his medical degree from Shanghai Medical University and a PhD in immunology from SUNY Buffalo. During his internal medicine residency at SUNY Stony Brook, he worked alongside the infamous “Dr. Death,” Michael Swango—an experience that led to his involvement with the FBI. Dr. Chen later completed his gastroenterology training at UCLA and served as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan.

He has authored over thirty scientific articles in leading journals such as Science. His first memoir, A Physician’s Memoir: Growing Up in Mao’s China, reflects on hardship, resilience, and faith. His second, A Physician’s Memoir: My Days with “Dr. Death” Swango and with the FBI, offers a gripping account of his forty-five days with Swango, exploring the contrast between outward charm and hidden evil, and the pursuit of justice in medicine.
