John D. Barbour

John D. Barbour is Professor of Religion Emeritus at St. Olaf College in

Northfield, Minnesota, where he taught from 1982 to 2018 and served as the

Martin Marty Chair of Religion and the Academy and Boldt Chair in the

Humanities. He wrote five scholarly books, most recently "Journeys of

Transformation: Searching for No-Self in Western Buddhist Travel

Narratives" (Cambridge University Press, 2022), and "Renunciation: A Novel"

(Wipf and Stock, 2013) and "Family Conscience: A Memoir of Four

Generations" (Cascade Books, 2025).
