Richard Moon began formal study of Aikido in 1971 with Robert Nadeau sensei—
a personal student of the founder of the art of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba O sensei. Richard
has studied numerous martial arts, including Cheng Hsin, Tai Chi, and boxing with
world champion Peter Ralston. He trained in Capoeira with three-time world heavyweight
champion, Mestre Acordeon Bira Almeida. He has studied and taught
yoga since 1963. Richard studied dance with John Graham and impro-
visational theater with The Committee. A lifetime student across a
broad spectrum of music, he has studied with many masters in many
styles, including classical guitar with George C. Economides, Indian
ragas and voice with flautist G. S. Sachdev of the Ali Akbar College
of Music, and jazz at the California Jazz Conservatory. Richard has
also performed in numerous blues and rock bands over many decades.
As a partner with Chris Thorsen in an Aikido-based consulting
firm, Richard has coached executives and their teams in the corpo-
rate realm, helping them to develop dynamic presence, inspired lead-
ership, and collective intelligence. Using issues of conflict as sources
of power, the firm has worked with groups to facilitate communica-
tion and creativity, to mediate, and to solve problems through the
power of extraordinary listening. Richard’s work combining Aikido
and dialogue in a sophisticated marriage was enriched by his study
of dialogue with David Bohm and nonviolent communication with
Marshall Rosenberg.
Richard has worked internationally, applying the
principles of Aikido in mediation and international peace building
through work done in Cyprus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and around the
Pacific Rim.
