Marc-Charles Nicolas: A Bouquet of Love for Haiti
Alongside his technological career, Marc-Charles Nicolas is a sensitive and committed poet. His most recent collection, Salut Haïti or Bouquet of Love for My Country, is a passionate declaration to his homeland. In it, he evokes the sea, coconut trees, and the landscapes of his childhood in Port-de-Paix—along with the pain of exile and the longing for a country he has never stopped loving.
There, we discover a poet singing of his land with its lush greenery, sun-drenched beaches, and majestic trees. With a voice both piercing and intimate, his verses guide us on a soulful journey back to his childhood city: Port-de-Paix. His poetry speaks of absence, silence, and the sorrow of living far from his native soil.
Salut Haïti / Bouquet of Love for My Country is a book of dawn—a plunge into childhood, memory, love, and roots. Here, Marc-Charles Nicolas continues his quest for light. Stepping back, he listens to the world, seeking to capture the beauty of Haiti’s horizon. His poetry takes on the wonder of a child mesmerized by nature, letting it transform him: the poet walking slowly through the grass, alert to birds and other subtle signs hidden in the movement of forms. Between the lines, his love for Haiti shines in every word.
Marc-Charles Nicolas writes with urgency:
The urgency to bear witness to his attachment to Haiti,
The urgency to speak of rivers, the Caribbean Sea,
The urgency to give voice to all that remains silent.
“My land, I’ve visited other countries and wandered afar
Oh madness of desire, but nothing erased my love.
My eyes, drowned in tears, offer you flowers.
I count the hours and give you the dawn of my heart.”
His poetry becomes a cry from the heart—clear, melancholic, and haunting:
“It is a land of jasmine, essential oil, and vetiver.
A country sold at auction.
A state of smooth-talking politicians and cryptic speeches.
A kingdom stirred by rum and exceptional spirits.”
Marc-Charles Nicolas is the author of several works in both poetry and prose, including Paradis Parfumé, Rêves Poétiques, Marche Poétique vers ma Terre, Extra Income in Times of Hardship, and 150 Gospel Choir Songs Chorded for Dummies. His writing is fluid, refined, and musical—exploring both the beauty of the world and the depths of the human soul with finesse and feeling.
