John M. Greally

John Greally is a Professor of Genetics and Pediatrics, at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York City.

A native of Galway, Ireland, Dr. Greally received his honours degree in Medicine from the University of Galway. He trained in paediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and clinical genetics at Yale University.

He received his higher degrees in medicine (DMed) and science (PhD) from the University of Galway, and has been awarded a Fellowship of the American College of Medical Genetics (FACMG).

He has over 210 peer-reviewed publications and is the recipient of numerous National Institutes of Health and other grant awards.

He is the Founding Director of the Center for Epigenomics at Einstein. He serves as an attending physician in the Genetics service of Montefiore Medical Center. He founded and is Executive Director of the New York Center for Rare Diseases (NYCRD).

His basic science research uses genomic assays to understand human disease pathogenesis, focused on the discovery of functional non-coding variants in the >98% of the human genome that does not encode genes. His mission is to improve genomic diagnostics, especially for the patient population he serves in the Bronx in New York City. In March 2025 he was recognized by the Bronx Borough President, Vanessa L. Gibson, with a Proclamation for his work serving the communities of the Bronx.

Outside medicine and science, he has been a rugby coach for over two decades, and has a long-standing interest in the interface between art and science, the visual representation of scientific information.
