Mark C. Austin is a native of Cache County, Utah. He is currently retired. He grew up on a farm during his teen age years, thinning and harvesting sugar beets, hauling hay, picking pole beans, and milking cows. He worked several summers on Utah State University Experiment Farms performing tests on grains and legume crops. He served two years in the Army, Military Intelligence Branch. He was employed for 11 years at Hughes Aircraft Company in El Segundo, California, and 20 years at Sperry - L3 in Salt Lake City, Utah, as department managers. He is the great-great--grandson of James Gray Willie, the captain of the Willie Handcart Company. He and his wife served two summer as Latter-day Saint missionaries at the Mormon Handcart Historic Sites in Wyoming, specifically assigned to Sixth Crossing, the site where the Willie Handcart Company was rescued

Mark attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah, where he earned three degrees in Electrical Engineering (Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Ph .D)
