Trevor Cohen

Trevor Cohen is a Professor of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Washington in Seattle. Originally a medical doctor in South Africa, he was propelled toward studying computer applications in medicine in Manhattan by a series of serendipitous events. His doctoral work at Columbia University concerned models that learn from language and how they represent meaning in psychiatry. Since then, he has published extensively on computational models of meaning in medicine, with recent application areas including detecting changes in mental state, making medical literature accessible, and making models robust to language differences across data sources. A fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, he is an editor of a textbook on AI in medicine, an author of a book on large language models, and a practitioner of improvisation in music and life.
