Barbara Vanderlinden

Barbara Vanderlinden is an author, editor, and independent curator who most recently served as Professor of Exhibition Studies and Spatiality at the University of the Arts Helsinki and Director of its Exhibition Laboratory. Previously, she was Visiting Professor for the first International Curator Course of the Gwangju Biennale Foundation. She co-authored The Manifesta Decade: Debates on Contemporary Art Exhibitions and Biennials in Post-Wall Europe (MIT Press), the first major multidisciplinary publication on contemporary biennial and large-scale exhibition practices, and is the author of Monograph as a Project (Yale University Press), a study on the early work of Venezuelan/Belgian artist Carla Arocha and her collaboration with Stéphane Schraenen.

Vanderlinden’s curatorial work is closely associated with the decade-long experimental platform Roomade (Brussels) and its related exhibitions Laboratorium (Antwerp Open, with Hans Ulrich Obrist) and Indiscipline (Brussels 2000). She has co-curated numerous international exhibitions, including Manifesta 2 (Luxembourg), Generation Z (P.S.1 MoMA, New York), Revolution/Restoration (BOZAR, Brussels), and Do You Believe in Reality? (2004 Taipei Biennial, Taipei Fine Arts Museum).
