I write fantasy, speculative fiction, and stories that have a habit of taking off in directions I never expected. Coffee is usually within reach, while my two cats, Link and Midna, supervise the entire operation.
One day, Link jumped down the stairs and landed hard enough to shake the house. He raced back upstairs, jumped again, and this time landed so softly that a feather would have been jealous. Watching him immediately reminded me of Anne McCaffrey’s P.E.R.N. series and the dragons’ ability to control gravity.
Then came the question: What if dragons never really disappeared? What if the dragons became cats?
And that was the beginning (of the end). Link and Midna are why I began the world of Where Have All The Dragons Gone?
Midna is a black American Shorthair with green eyes and enough attitude to justify her title of Queen. Link is an orange tabby with green eyes, one scraggly dagger of a tooth hanging below his bottom jaw, and an apparent ability to alter gravity whenever he feels like it.
Writing one series was apparently not enough to keep me occupied.
I also run the BeaDragonia Writing Group and publish seasonal and special-edition flash-fiction anthologies featuring writers of different ages and experience levels. Some have been writing for years. Others are seeing their names printed in a book for the first time.
That has become one of my favorite parts of what I do.
I have spent most of my life telling stories in one form or another. Now I spend my time writing them, publishing them, helping other writers publish theirs, and following characters who frequently seem to know what happens next before I do. I will never know it all. There are still far too many questions that need answers.
And I’m still listening to the dragons.
