Clair was born in Croydon, Surrey but grew up in Pontypool in the South Wales Valleys. After graduating, she started her career as a commercial estate manager and valuer working in Bristol and London before returning to Wales to set up her own property company. Getting bored with the world of property, she studied for an MBA at Cardiff and stumbled into becoming a university lecturer and course director. She eventually became the Entrepreneurship Champion for Wales as part of the multimillion-pound Knowledge Exploitation Fund project but, exasperated by the level of bureaucracy she had to deal with, she escaped to Hampshire where she has devoted her new life to her husband and two children. Just to keep herself out of mischief though, she sold vintage books and puzzles which she was pleased to say involved hardly any bureaucracy at all. Now she divides her time between writing and designing hand knitted items which her whole family then has to wear especially at Christmas!
