J. Mark Bishop

Professor J. Mark Bishop is a preeminent figure in the field of Artificial Intelligence, with a career spanning over three decades since the early 1990s. Until his retirement in 2020, Mark served as Professor of Cognitive Computing and Director of The Centre for AI and Analytics at Goldsmiths, University of London. His leadership extended internationally, notably Chairing of the AISB—the UK's professional body for AI and the longest-established society of its kind worldwide—and serving as an International Fellow of the Karel Capek Centre in Prague.

Mark has published 200+ academic papers and 4 books on AI & Cognitive Science: Views into the Chinese Room (2002: with John Preston); Contemporary Sensorimotor Theory (2013: with Andrew Martin); Embodied Cognition, Acting and Performance (2018: with Bryon, McLoughlin & Kaufman) and Driving Intelligence - The Green Book: routes to autonomy (2025: with Gabriel Seibreth).

Mark has provided strategic advice on AI policy to the UN, UNICRI, the EU, and the UK Parliament and regularly featured across international media, including Newsnight, Sky News, C4 News, Voice of America, The Today Programme & R4’s ‘Agree to Differ’.
