Chris Smith

Christopher M. Smith is a hospice clinician and essayist who writes about what happens in the quiet spaces of care—where medicine ends, and humanity begins. His work has been published in STAT First Opinion, The Conversation Project, and Pulse Voices, where he explores grief, ethics, caregiving, and the unseen moments that define end-of-life experiences.

Drawing from years of clinical practice, Smith’s writing is rooted in observation, presence, and restraint. He is particularly interested in how environments, institutional language, and silence shape the way people die—and the way the living remember them. His upcoming book, Designing Compassion in Hospice Care: The Quiet Room, expands on these themes, examining hospice care through the lens of space, memory, and moral responsibility.

Before finding his voice in national publications, Smith self-published a series of reflective and experimental pieces—works that trace a writer learning how to listen, how to look, and how to tell the truth without spectacle. Those early efforts remain central to his approach: writing not to explain death, but to sit beside it.
