J Coates once toiled in the mysterious world of movie production, where the collective sense of humour was usually dryer than a camel's armpit, and the only thing more fanciful than the scripts was the budget. Having survived with most of his wits intact, he sensibly took up writing instead. His harem books sometimes blend genres—fantasy, sci-fi, and thrillers—and often involve characters rising from humble beginnings to shake their worlds. He remains convinced that writing is the one profession where staring into space counts as productivity, and is determined to keep fooling people on that front for as long as humanly possible.
