Martyn Burke

Martyn Burke works in a multitude of worlds, moving between novels, films, and documentaries. He has published seven acclaimed novels, most inspired by his experiences as a documentary filmmaker. His first novel, LAUGHING WAR, drew from

his time as a young journalist in the Vietnam war. His second book, THE COMMISSAR’S REPORT, found its genesis in his documentary about the KGB, and IVORY JOE, which comedically looks at the Mob control of the music industry and

exploitation of black artists in early rock and roll days, has its roots in his award-winning documentary about the Mafia, CONNECTIONS. While continuing to write books and make documentaries, he has also moved into filmmaking as a

writer and director. His films have ranged from the Peabody Award winning documentary UNDER FIRE: JOURNALISTS IN COMBAT, examining the psychological cost of covering wars, to the Paramount spy spook, TOP SECRET. His awards and

nominations include the International Press Academy Auteur Awards, nominations for Emmys, Writers Guild and Directors Guild awards, and short-list for an Academy Award.

His latest novel, THE GOSSIP COLUMNIST, revisits his work in journalism and interaction with totalitarian regimes throughout his career, as it dives into the world of the Weimar republic and Nazi Germany to tell the story of a young

woman’s fight against the Nazi’s war on truth and free speech.
