Naoko Mikami

Naoko Mikami is a Tokyo-based Japanese calligrapher, artist, and writer who explores timeless Japanese wisdom through language, visual art, and history.

Raised by her grandmother, a calligrapher and poet, Mikami was immersed from an early age in Japanese classical literature, calligraphy, and traditional aesthetics. Although she did not initially plan to become an artist, her path gradually led her back to calligraphy through a combination of personal experience, international living, and a growing desire to reinterpret Japanese culture for contemporary audiences.

Her work bridges past and present, translating concepts drawn from samurai philosophy, Zen thought, and classical poetry into forms that resonate with modern life, leadership, and creativity. Alongside her artistic practice, she regularly writes and speaks about Japanese cultural ideas for an international audience.

Mikami’s calligraphy has been featured in exhibitions and cultural projects in Japan and abroad, including collaborations with media, institutions and design-related initiatives. She also creates original works that combine calligraphy with modern formats, emphasizing clarity, restraint, and intention.

Her writing reflects the same approach as her art: grounded in history, attentive to language, and focused on helping readers see familiar challenges from a deeper, more reflective perspective.
