Mel Rutherford

Mel Rutherford, PhD, is an experimental psychologist whose work explores how people perceive, understand, and lead one another. He earned his B.A. from Yale University and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. A Fulbright Fellowship allowed him to conduct pre-doctoral research at Cambridge University with Simon Baron-Cohen.

Mel’s leadership journey spans academia, advocacy, and precedent‑setting legal action. As a transman, he took the province to court in Rutherford v. Ontario, the landmark case that established that a parent in Ontario who creates their family using an anonymous sperm donor can be listed on their children's birth certificates. His experiences navigating identity and institutional power inform his writing.

Mel was called to chair his academic department during a period of crisis—a classic Glass Cliff leadership moment—and Mel brought a values‑based approach to governance. He is committed to creating environments where people can thrive, both in academia and in leadership.
