Michael Robinson is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at American University in Washington, DC, USA, and is both a mathematician and an engineer. As a mathematician, he draws inspiration from problems in engineering, using “useless” mathematics to solve increasingly difficult engineering problems. Although engineers tend to avoid abstraction, the abstraction he employs has proven to more successfully addressed a wide variety of challenges. As an engineer, he builds equipment that works, constructing working prototype systems to better understand engineering needs.
