J. Bancroft

J. Bancroft has always believed that the best stories come from the people who stay — the ones who build something in a place and learn every creak in its floorboards. She grew up hearing the kind of practical, plainspoken wisdom that tends to get said once and not repeated, and she has been writing it down ever since.

She has shared her home with animals for as long as she can remember, and she has learned from them what she tries to bring to her fiction: the value of stillness, the patience required to understand something that can't explain itself, and the particular reward of noticing what everyone else has walked past.

Her debut novel, Calculated Poison, introduced veterinarian Ivy Ashcroft — a woman with a clinical brain, a quiet life, and the stubborn habit of writing down the things that don't fit. Set in the small farming community of Pale Creek, Ohio, the Ivy Ashcroft Mystery series follows a woman who never set out to be brave and keeps finding herself there anyway. The trilogy is now complete with Calculated Silence and Calculated Damage, and Ivy's story continues.

J. Bancroft reads widely, sleeps less than her animals would prefer, and considers a good cup of tea and a difficult problem to be an entirely satisfactory Friday evening.
