Luca Aresu

Luca Aresu is a prolific storyteller who moves fluidly between grand-scale historical reimagining and the intimate, quiet moments of contemporary life. With a sharp eye for social dynamics and a cinematic prose style, Aresu has built a diverse body of work that resonates with readers looking for depth beneath the surface.

Alternative History & Epics

He is the creator of the acclaimed uchronia trilogy, The Century of the Compass. In this ambitious series, Aresu reimagines the Middle Ages through the lens of Matilda of Tuscany (Matilde di Canossa), blending historical rigor with speculative twists to craft an epic where the destiny of Europe takes a radical, unexpected turn.

Slice of Life & Contemporary Fiction

Aresu is perhaps best known to his English-speaking audience for his "slice of life" narratives—stories that capture the beauty, tension, and heartbreak of the everyday. From the poignant reflections in What Remains of Us and The Woman Who Was Already There to the atmospheric domesticity of The Caretaker’s Room and Common Wall, his work explores the "unsaid" in human relationships. Whether dealing with the weight of memory in High Water or the missed connections in What I Never Said to You, Aresu’s fiction is a masterclass in capturing the human condition.

Satire & Social Experiments

Beyond fiction, Aresu is the mind behind Viviamo Cosė—not a traditional novel, but a sharp, ironic social experiment. Written as an analytical treatise by a researcher from the distant future who discovers a lost iPhone, the book serves as a satirical autopsy of our modern, over-observed digital lives.

Italian Roots

While his primary focus remains on international fiction, Aresu also maintains a presence in his native Italian literature, ranging from the nostalgic and heartwarming trilogy Quando la vita sapeva di buono to the sharp-witted comedy Exit Strategy and darker, psychological titles like Il metodo Bellini.
