Bennett L. Singer

Bennett Singer is a Los Angeles–based writer, editor, and filmmaker whose work explores LGBTQ+ history, civil rights, and social change. His books include STEPS TO LIBERATION: THE RAINBOW FLAG, HUMAN RIGHTS & FREEDOM, a global anthology he co-edited; LGBTQ STATS, an award-winning almanac co-authored with David Deschamps and praised as “indispensable” and “astonishing” in a starred Booklist review; GROWING UP GAY/GROWING UP LESBIAN, an anthology for young people that Publishers Weekly called “a giant step forward”; 42 UP, the companion volume to Michael Apted’s acclaimed documentary series; and THE STUDENT BODY, a novel of suspense co-authored with three college classmates. His work has appeared in The New York Times, TIME, The Advocate, and other publications.

Singer’s documentary credits include CURED, an Emmy-nominated PBS documentary about the landmark campaign that led the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses; BROTHER OUTSIDER: THE LIFE OF BAYARD RUSTIN, a portrait of the visionary civil rights strategist; ELECTORAL DYSFUNCTION, an exploration of voting rights and the American electoral system; QUEER2QUEER, a series of intergenerational conversations about LGBTQ+ activism; and EYES ON THE PRIZE II, the landmark PBS series on the civil rights movement.
