Originally from Melbourne, Irwin moved to Japan in 2005 and has spent the past 20+ years photographing for international publications and brands. He enjoys working in diverse fields, whether it be creating imagery for Fortune 500 tech giants like SpaceX, or insightful portraiture for The Washington Post.
His favorite thing is highlighting lesser known aspects of Japanese culture, be they traditional or modern. His first book with Gestalten featured the wide range of beautiful handcrafting tradition in Japan (Handmade in Japan, 2019) and his second
(The Obsessed - Otaku, Tribes and Subcultures of Japan, 2022) chronicled the endless colorful subcultures the country has to offer.
