Humphry X

Humphry is the Chief Cat Correspondent at XO·CAT, where he writes in two registers: cozy mysteries under the Inkwell & Whiskers series, and evidence-based cat care for the people trying to live well with the animals who run their households.

The nonfiction is built on veterinary behavioral science, peer-reviewed research, and a low tolerance for the kind of advice the internet repeats because the internet repeats it. The fiction is built on something quieter — the observation that a murder is rarely the most interesting thing about a town. The interesting thing is what the town has been pretending not to know: the question nobody asks, the page in the local-history shelf nobody turns, the porch light left on a little too long. Cats notice these things first. So do the people willing to look up from their own lives.

Both lines share an editorial standard that occasionally requires negotiation with the cat on the desk. The cat has opinions. They are, more often than not, correct.

Humphry writes most mornings from the Maine coast, with coffee, the harbor outside the window, and a fictional version of the towns he has spent most autumns in, paying attention.
