Roque J. Calvo III was born in Bethlehem, PA and named after his Spanish-immigrant grandfather but was widely known by both the Americanized “Rocky” or his father’s Italian Catholic baptismal name “Rocco.” His formative years in Bethlehem were significantly shaped by early coaching influences, propelling his athletic achievements at Freedom High School and later leading to a Hall of Fame basketball career at Lebanon Valley College. Among his key mentors were his father, a celebrated coach at Moravian College, and Pete Carril, his father's best friend and a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee. Following an MBA from Rider University, Roque built a successful business career while simultaneously nurturing young talent as a coach for his son’s AAU basketball teams. His dedication to coaching extended to high school programs across both private and public schools in New Jersey. Roque’s own unparalleled high school playing experience culminated in a basketball season of extraordinary achievement, the true significance of which only became fully apparent through the lens of three decades spent coaching. Now, drawing upon his remarkable life in athletics as both a player and a seasoned coach, he shares profound and thought-provoking insights into the dynamics of team sports and the enduring value of youth athletic competition in this book.
