Fred has worked in a wide variety of technical roles, from traditional information technology and software development to cybersecurity. His experience includes work as a computer programmer, database administrator, systems administrator, security engineer, and penetration tester. He currently works as a Security Control Assessor, evaluating whether security protections work in practice—not merely whether they look good in policies, reports, or checklists.
He began writing after years of helping friends and family solve technical problems, recover from security issues, and make sense of advice that was often more confusing than useful. After enough of them asked why he had never simply written it all down, he finally decided to try.
That experience shaped the way he writes. Fred focuses on making complicated subjects understandable and useful without stripping away the details that matter. His approach emphasizes clear priorities, practical solutions, and systems that remain useful when real life intervenes and someone inevitably makes a mistake.
Fred is a U.S. military veteran who lives in the Midwestern United States with his wife and their two dogs. He spends much of his time at home, where his longstanding interest in technology has expanded into writing, experimentation, and an assortment of personal projects—all under the close supervision of his dogs.
