I taught myself to read at four. I was a naughty child who spent a good deal of time standing in a dark corner, in the hallway of my grandparent’s house. My mother had little patience with me and my grandmother could not change her daughter’s perspective. She turned a light on for me. I found a book on the bookcase and sounded out the letters to learn what magical message those words had to offer.
At nine, I wrote poetry. Later, I wrote better poetry and still have pages that I should turn into a book, someday.
I love creating characters who are real to me. It’s like making new friends. We spend months together weaving their stories into real lives. They’re birthed from ideas that I’ve gleaned over the years, from real life stories that people have shared. Experience and the ability to talk to strangers make my characters come alive.
When you read my books, I am beside you, spinning the yarn for your entertainment. It’s a journey we take together.
