Vinny Carpenter

Vinny Carpenter has spent more than thirty years building software and leading engineering teams, growing organizations from greenfield to hundreds of engineers. His work sits where technology strategy meets daily delivery: cloud, platform, GenAI, and developer experience, and the operating models that help teams ship well at scale.

He writes regularly about software, AI, platform engineering, and engineering leadership, with a focus on agentic development, spec-driven delivery, and the human side of automation. His throughline is simple: AI amplifies builders rather than replacing them, and the real constraint is rarely the tools.

The Bottleneck Is Never the Stack grew out of that writing practice, a year of essays sharpened into one argument about intent, judgment, standards, and trust. The expanded second edition follows that argument into work design, governance, roles, evidence, and the scale decisions of an engineering operating model. Kirkus Reviews calls it “a new take on the AI debate with an intriguing framework for implementation.” He believes technology gets better when more people get to build, and is a longtime supporter of Girls Who Code.
