Softcover. Condition: As New. Leichte Kratzer / Abnutzungen / Druckstellen. Planets and Moons covers topics relating to the physics of the major planetary bodies in the solar system, starting with an introductory description of the solar system and collection of pertinent data, continuing with a discussion of the early history of the planets, and finishing with articles about planet dynamics, thermal evolution of planets and satellites, and descriptions of their magnetic fields and the processes that generate them. In addition to providing a review on the solid planets and the satellites, this volume addresses the interactions of solid surfaces and atmospheres as well as the roles of water and ice in shaping the surfaces of planetary bodies.…

Buch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book collects a set of contributions that reflect the profound transformation in our understanding of Saturn and its system of rings and moons. Once considered a relatively stable and slowly evolving system, it is now recognized as highly dynamic, shaped by unexpectedly strong tidal dissipation within the planet. This has major implications for the orbital evolution of its satellites, suggesting rapid outward migration and challenging long-standing views on the age and origin of both moons and rings. Central to these advances is the wealth of data returned by the Cassini mission, whose long-term observations, combined with significant progress in theoretical modeling, have reshaped our picture of the coupled evolution of Saturn, its interior, its rings, and its satellites.Bringing together leading experts across planetary science, this volume presents a coherent and interdisciplinary synthesis of these developments. The contributions explore the dynamical history of the Saturnian system, the processes governing tidal dissipation, and the complex interactions between rings, moons, and planetary interiors.By highlighting both recent breakthroughs and remaining open questions, the book offers a new vision of Saturn as a laboratory for understanding planetary systems. It provides essential insights not only into the evolution of giant planets and their satellites, but also into broader processes shaping planetary systems throughout the Solar System and beyond.Reprinted from Space Science Reviews, New Vision of the Saturnian System in the Context of a Highly Dissipative Saturn, Vol. 219-222, 2023-2026.…

Buch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Venus is a scientifically rich target for exploration. The evolution of Venus is, at present, poorly known, despite it being our closest planetary neighbor. This book reviews current knowledge of how Venus formed, evolved, andreached its current state. It is not clear how its tectonic and volcanic activity has varied through history, nor whether it once had a habitable phase with liquid water on its surface.Science questions addressed in the book span interior processes, surface geology, the atmosphere, climate, evidence for current activity, and the potential for past habitability.Venus is also critical to planetary sciences in a broader sense. What lessons can we learn about the history of life and habitability on Earth-sized planets and terrestrial planets in general, whether in our solar system or elsewhere The book addresses how increased study of Venus will also advance our understanding of critical questions for astrobiology, comparative planetology, and the processes that shaped the early Earth.New discoveries and analyses of recent space missions, have yielded a wealth of new insights into the evolution of Venus. This book outlines how upcoming missions and related investigations will provide data needed to piece back together what caused Earth and Venus to evolve so differently.Reprinted from Space Science Reviews Topical Collection 'Venus: Evolution Through Time'. …

Hardback. Condition: New. With ESA's upcoming JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) mission to Jupiter and Ganymede, this book provides a fascinating and timely summary of our current knowledge about Ganymede: the largest moon in the Solar System and the only one with an intrinsic magnetic field. Written by a team of multidisciplinary experts spanning geology, space physics and habitability, it provides up-to-date knowledge about Ganymede. The history of its discovery, formation, surface, atmosphere and space environment are discussed in accessible language and supported by the enormous amount of data obtained by Galileo, the Hubble Space Telescope and earlier missions. The latest surface maps of Ganymede are also presented, providing an invaluable reference for graduate students and researchers working in planetary science. …

Buch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This collection of scientific papers provides a state-of-the-art look at current knowledge on ocean worlds in our solar system and beyond. It is the result of a collaborative effort by scientists studying both terrestrial and extraterrestrial oceans, and analyzes the emergence of life and its survival on Earth as well as other potentially habitable planets and moons. The papers examine the more remote provinces of our solar system, focusing on the icy moons of the giant planets, like Europa and Titan, as well as bodies like Ceres and putative extrasolar ocean worlds. Their potential for subsurface liquid water oceans are explored, as is as their astrobiological potential. The collection also takes a look at Earth's own oceans, which offer important clues for the investigation of other ocean worlds. In addition, the collection addresses the outstanding key scientific questions and measurements, technologies and laboratory experiments necessary for the exploration of ocean worlds known today.Previously published in Space Science Reviews in the Topical Collection 'Ocean Worlds'.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Over the last fifteen years, space-based exploration of the solar system has increased dramatically, with more and more sophisticated orbiters and landers being sent to Mars. This intense period, rich in unprecedented scientific results, has led to immense progress in our perception of Mars and of its evolution over geological time. In parallel, advances in numerical simulations and laboratory experiments also shed new light on the geochemical evolution of the planet Mars. The ISSI-Europlanet Workshop entitled 'Quantifying the Martian Geochemical Reservoirs' was held in Bern in April 2011 with the objective to create a diverse interdisciplinary forum composed of scientists directly involved in space-based exploration of the Martian surface, meteoriticists studying SNC meteorites, and planetary and/or Earth scientists simulating, numerically or experimentally, the physical and chemical processes occurring on or within Mars. The chapters of this book provide an overview of current knowledge of the past and present Martian geochemical reservoirs, from the accretionary history to the secondary alteration processes at the surface. In addition to the detailed description of data from Mars and the methods used to obtain them, the contributions also emphasize comparison with features on Earth, providing a perspective on the extent to which our knowledge of terrestrial systems influences interpretation of data from Mars. Areas that would benefit from future work and measurements are also identified, providing a view of the short-term and long-term future of the study of Mars. This collection of chapters constitutes a timely perspective on current knowledge and thinking concerning the geochemical evolution of Mars, providing context and a valuable reference point for even more exciting future discoveries. It is aimed at graduate students and researchers active in geochemistry and space science. Previouslypublished in Space Science Reviews, Vol. 174/1-4, 2013.…
