Capt. Brian Teske, PhD, an airline pilot for over 30 years, currently flies the Airbus A330 for a major international airline based in Minneapolis. He also serves as a check pilot, instructor, and accident investigator. These years of flying have taught him what is happening inside the aircraft during every sound and motion that frighten the people seated behind him, and just as importantly, that being frightened by those things is a reasonable response to not knowing what they are.
Dr. Teske earned a PhD in Aerospace Sciences, focusing on High Reliability Theory, human factors, psychological safety, and how organizations learn from everyday operations. The research keeps confirming what he already believed. Fear is real, and it never responds well to dismissal. He tells passengers that “we are all on the same team, working together to have a great, safe flight,” and he means all of it, including the part where their comfort belongs to the crew as much as their safety does.
In this latest book, he draws on those years and conversations with people who dread the boarding gate. Many had never said their fear out loud to anyone. What they needed was someone patient enough to explain what the airplane was doing and kind enough to take their fear seriously while doing it.
